Jamie Bowie is a Team GB 400m athlete, originally from Inverness in the heart of the Highlands, but now based in Edinburgh. After graduating with a first class honours in International Management and Languages, he is now focusing on his athletics career.
He trains six times a week, commuting between the tracks at Pitreavie and Grangemouth. Jamie’s coach Piotr Haczek, is a Polish Olympian as well as World and European Champion, so has plenty of experience in success.
Jamie’s first full year with his current coach was a breakthrough year. In 2009, where he made huge advancements over the 400m, representing Team GB for the first time, at the European U23 Championships in Kaunas, Lithuania in the 4x400m relay.
In 2010, whilst studying in France, Jamie further improved his personal best over the 400m, as well as winning the Scottish Senior Indoor Championships, claiming silver at the French National Indoor Championships and bronze at the UK Aviva U23 Championships.
Returning to Edinburgh, to finish his studies at the end of the 2010 season Jamie put in a hard winter whilst balancing his studies, and has so far had an excellent 2011 season. During the indoor season, he lowered his indoor best to 47.65 claiming the British University’s (BUCS) indoor 400m title and Scottish Senior indoor title in the process.
Outdoors Jamie lowered his PB to 46.78 at a European meet in Oordegem, Belgium. After winning bronze at the Aviva U23 Championship, he was subsequently selected to represent GB for the second time at the European U23 Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic in the 4x400m relay. Jamie rose to the occasion in Ostrava and in the final of the 4x400m relay running on 3rd leg he ran a 45.33split – the fastest in Team GB and third fastest of the competition. His leg, along with the efforts of team mates Nigel, Thomas and Luke, helped Team GB claim the final gold medal of the Championships.
