Dave was born in 1984 in the small South Kent town of Hythe. Initially born partially sighted, he was a keen sports player and fan and this continued even after he went fully blind in 1996.
A fan of Nottingham Forest Football Club and Kent County Cricket Club, Dave played pretty much any sport possible whilst at boarding school in Worcester, captaining the school at cricket and football as well as earning 17 youth international caps at a specialist blind sport called Goalball.
After leaving school he mainly concentrated on playing cricket and becoming a professional sports journalist. After earning a degree in Broadcast Journalism Dave has gone on to work for a number of major media organisations in many capacities.
As for his sporting career, Dave has played national level blind cricket for Worcestershire, Essex, Warwickshire, Hampshire and most recently for Northants Steelbacks, who he captained to the 2006 national league title.
Dave is currently captain and chairman of Northants and has held the position of captain for five of the club’s six seasons in competitive cricket. He is also the club’s most capped player, second top wicket taker and fifth top run scorer as well as being the only totally blind player to take five wickets in a match for the club.
Dave is also chairman of British Blind Sport Cricket, general secretary of Blind Cricket England and Wales and a board member of British Blind Sport. His biggest off-field achievement has been securing test cricket grounds to host the national blind cricket cup final, with the event held on the main square at Edgbaston in 2009 and the Rose Bowl in 2010.
In his blogs here Dave will give an insight into the world of blind cricket as well as talking about other major sporting events that he is covering as a journalist or has an insight on through contacts in the sport.
