BOBBY WHITE: HIGHS AND LOWS

Since the domestic season finished in April there have been some highs and lows. I’m happy to say though, my season finished on a high with Great Britain securing our first competitive win against Bulgaria at Crystal Palace on 12 June 2010.

You can read more here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/olliewilliams/2010/06/for_the_win_how_gb_handballers.shtml

I returned back to the UK at the beginning of April with a medial collateral ligament sprain in my right knee which kept me out of my last club game and a week-long training camp with GB at Crystal Palace.

I was worried it would keep me out of our preparations for our 2012 European Championship Qualification matches which took place in mid June but luckily I was passed fit to travel to Spain where our preparations began.

We played Galicia (a Spanish regional team made up of first and second division Spanish players) three times, experimenting with different defensive systems and offensive tactics. Unfortunately we were without some key members of the team due to injury but that is the nature of sport and is something we will have to overcome time and time again as we progress toward 2012.

Despite losing all three matches with tight score lines, I managed to rack up 125 minutes court time out of a possible 180 minutes and put in three solid performances which I needed after being injured for our previous training camp.

Next up we travelled to Belgium, who we had lost narrowly to in October 2009. It was going to be a tough match as we lost more players to other various commitments. We were due to play two matches.

In the first match we were finding it difficult in the early stages and made a lot of errors in attack, exposing us to counter attacks which have been a continual problem for us. We found ourselves trailing by four goals at half time and it would appear that we were down and out.

After the break we showed tremendous character and belief and managed to claw our way back into the match establishing a five goal lead thanks to some good saves by myself and much better performance from the boys in attack. We held on to our lead and managed to secure our first win over European competition. It was an amazing feeling and a day that I won’t forget in a hurry.

Standards compliant sports website design by professionals for professionals

The next day we played Belgium again, we had lost influential line player Chris McDermott to injury and with him also being a key defender we found it difficult to contain a Belgian side keen on undoing the damage done the previous day.

We had no answers in defence or attack and slumped to a 14 goal defeat. All the energy put into the win the day before had cost us the match but fair play to the Belgians for coming back at us with everything they had.

The GB squad returned to Loughborough for a week of light training before we set off for our last set of friendly matches in Luxembourg before our European Qualifiers began. I missed the first game in Luxembourg due to personal reasons but made it out for the second game.

We had gone down by 13 goals in the game I missed which was a terrible result given that we drew with Luxembourg the previous October. We put in a better performance in the second game but still lost by nine goals. The squad appeared to be disjointed and with people coming in and out of the team at different stages we were finding it hard to find our rhythm.

We had hit a low point, but little did we know it was going to get worse before it got better. We returned to the UK to finish our preparations for our upcoming matches against Cyprus, Estonia and Bulgaria. Our official target was to secure one win out of the three matches.

Estonia were favourites of the group but we knew we would have a chance against Cyprus and the Bulgarians. In the first match it was looking good, we were in front against Cyprus at half time and appeared to be in control of the game.

I was a little disappointed not to retain my place in goal but the coach had gone for experience over form with Jesper Parker and he was doing well and keeping us ahead in the game. After the break we lost our heads and slumped to an 8 goal defeat. This was supposed to be our chance and we let it slip out of our hands.

We had a meeting that evening and tried to put our fingers on why we weren’t clicking as a team. We knew something had to change otherwise we would be thumped by Estonia who boast one of the best young talents in world handball and then struggle to pick ourselves up for the match against Bulgaria.

We dug deep in the first half trailing by five at half time. Jesper kept his place in goal and was doing ok but we were being exploited on the counter due to mistakes in attack. We continued to fight but went on to lose by nine goals. Although we lost the game against the group favourites, we had proved to ourselves that we could play fast, effective handball and with a performance like this tomorrow, surely we could match the Bulgarians.

Saturday came, the Hall was packed with over 500 fans and there was an air of excitement about. We got off to a bad start, Parker failed to get into the game and I replaced him after about 10 minutes. We were already down by five.

I managed to get into the game quickly and made a few saves and got us back within a couple of goals so we were down by two at half time. We had to come at them with everything in the second half to be in with a shout. I was in good form and keeping us close to them but we managed to miss a few clear chances to draw level.

Five minutes from the end we were down by four goals but we refused to give in. We battled our way level with a minute left and Steven Larsson scored his 13th goal of the game in the last second to give us a 33-32 victory.

We had done it, the crowd had got behind us and despite being eight goals behind at one point we didn’t give up. It was a fantastic moment in my career to date. It may sound crazy to celebrate winning one game and not even qualifying for the Euro’s but given what the team had been through the last few years we were going to treasure every second in front of the cheering fans.

It was a mixture of joy and relief. The fans, many of them experiencing their first taste of Handball had just witnessed a GB team making history. First win over European opposition on home soil; let’s hope there is more to come!

DAVID KING: PRE-SEASON SKATING IN WALES

Welcome back to the latest installment of my skating blog and I’m in the lovely Welsh city of Cardiff. We’ve just finished show number one of two, for our Chiller spectacular and are really enjoying the whole experience. A little tired now but its first show down after a full week rehearsals and it went great! Shows are very different from the competitive aspect of our training it’s all a lot more crowd pleasing with elements to it we are not allowed to attempt in competitions.

Pre-season has been pretty steady, lots of running, gym work, dance sessions and absolutely no ice. Weather has been fantastic for it though! I was training with the football reserve team here too, mainly doing drills and agility but it was great fun and a shame the season here has finished. So now I’ll probably start my rock climbing again, just to keep me active. The rest of our time is taken up by the World cup, watching the beautiful game and relishing in all the excitement that comes with it.

Skating wise, we’re back on the ice at the start of July which we are really looking forward too! We have a just been selected for skate America Grand Prix which gives us an early goal and with a bit of luck could be awarded our maximum allowance with a second Grand Prix later on.

Depending on our funding throughout the season we will try and get out to some ISU internationals as well! All squad skaters have been asked to compete at Sheffield at the end of August, which is extremely early for us but you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do.

All the very best and keep your chin up!

Monday

Today I woke up at Stuart’s parent’s house, as I am flying from Heathrow on Tuesday it made more sense for me stop here and travel with Stuart early Tuesday morning. So, this morning we got up and did a spin on the bike around Richmond Park, it was first time for me around Richmond and it reminded me so much of a park back in Sydney.

Isn’t it weird how one minute you’re cycling amongst the hussle and bussle of main roads and traffic and then the next you’re into a park surrounded by loads of cyclists and runners… brilliant!!

Tuesday

Travel day. Well, anyone who has travelled to anywhere in America knows that it is not the easiest journey in the world to make. We started off at five in the morning leaving for our flight to Chicago and then onto Des Moines, where TJ met us at the airport.

TJ is a long distance elite triathlete who Stuart met out in Australia a few years back. Once we found TJ we all went for some lunch and then travelled to his parents house where me and Stuart were staying.

Oh my God, what a place! The house, or more like, mansion, we were staying in was gorgeous. It compromised of; a games room, cinema room, the best living and kitchen rooms, swimming pool, Jacuzzi, and who knows how many bedrooms! Basically, you name it, they had it.

I felt like I was living in something from MTV cribs! A huge thank you to Nan and Rick for having me there! Xx

Wednesday

So, up early and in for a swim with TJ and Stuart. The plan was to just keep mainly ticking over really, keeping the feel for things and not wasting any energy. Me and Stuart spent most the day watching movies in the cinema room! Life is good and I am one spoilt lucky lady indeed!

Thursday

Up early for a swim with TJ and Stuart again with some pickups and yet again, just ticking over for the day. I met tiny Ashley – TJ’s fiancee – I don’t think I have ever seen anyone so tiny!

A runner, a great runner and so lovely! After swimming, it was back to TJ’s house and he showed me something that could save a lot a people a lot of money, especially when in the USA but also all around the world really!

It’s a bike bag that is within the dimensions so you don’t have to pay (or something) anyway it’s absolutely fantastic, so take a look www.rustersports.com.

On the evening me and Stuart went out with all of TJ’s family for dinner which was really nice. They are such a nice family, really close and very supportive, it truly was great meeting and chatting with everyone.

Friday

This morning the rain came big time! And I tell you, when it rains here it really does rain! Luckily it stopped just in time for us to go and swim in the lake where we are going to be swimming on Sunday, it was really warm which was ace, about 23 degrees Celsius.

So I am thinking non wetsuit swim, which suits me fine. Then later on that evening it was race briefing, nothing really new to be honest, well apart from the big prize purse for winning and being first out the water.

It will be an interesting battle for the latter, between Hayley Perisol and Sara McClarty, I wouldn’t like to pick between them to be honest.

It’s great to be surrounded by the World’s best of the best – European, World and Olympic Champions, the excitement is building.

Saturday

It is the big day before the race. Well, to be honest it’s been really relaxing, I did what training I needed to do this morning and then chilled for the rest of the day.

We had the England V USA match to watch, which was good considering what country I am in! But oh dear… what the hell are we doing? The only good thing about the match was it took my mind off the race and I was off out for dinner with Stuart, TJ and Ashley!

Sunday

Race Day! So, this is the day I’ve been waiting for. The build up has been huge, mainly because I wanted to test myself against the best of the best but also because of the big prize fund.

I’m not going to lie. I really needed to do well in this race for that reason also. When you’re not being supported by the federation I then have to rely heavily on family and friends which I hate, but for this year, has to be done.

Anyway, this morning Ashley picked me up and took me down to the race venue. At this time I wasn’t sure if the race was going to go ahead as the thunder and lightning was the worst I had seen. Luckily the rain stopped, the sky cleared and the humidity was up to 95%! Bring on the race!

Right, introduced onto the pontoon, the gun went and off I went. I had a good start and got straight onto some quick feet (not too sure who it was?).

I was swimming great and felt really good sat in the lead pack. I came out at the halfway point and saw I was in great company, with Helen Jenkins, Sarah Haskins and Laura Bennett. So, apart from the two USA girls off out in front, I was in a good position.

Out the water, in and out of T1 and in the lead pack on the bike. Doing some turns but not too much and it all really kept the same on the bike. A few girls just sat there as always but there we go! Now onto the run, I haven’t felt like I have been able to run how I want to run so far this year yet, so hopefully today was going to be the day!

I went in and out of T2 in about 10th position and the lead girls already had a bit of a gap in front, with Emma Moffatt leading the way, but the way I love to run was what I had planned. I went out hard and went straight to the front. I was running how I wanted to run and it stayed like that up until just before 3k to go, when Emma Snowsill showed why she is Olympic Champion and came flying past at such speed, I tried to go with her but my legs wouldn’t let me.

This is where the pack split up and Emma Moffatt , Helen Jenkins, Andrea Hewitt and Paula Findley showed their strength and left myself and Laura Bennett to battle it out for sixth and seventh place. Before this race I had beaten Laura and she had beaten me, so we were both on for the battle, but she was too strong for me today and I ended up seventh.

I am so pleased with how I raced today and I know it’s all coming together. I have to remember that I am only 21 and learning more and more every race.
I want to end this blog by first saying thank you to Stuart and Michelle for letting me basically live at their house for the past month and to my family and friends for all the support they show me day in and day out.

I have met some great new friends on this adventure. The Tollakson family have put me up in their home and came to support me on race day. I was a total stranger to them, so thank you. I must give a special mention to Ashley who was my Michelle for the day and did an awesome job with taking care of me race day.

Now I am having a day of dirty food in the United States of America to celebrate! Thanks for tuning in guys. See you all very soon

JODIE STIMPSON: GOLD AT BLENHEIM, NOW FOR DES MOINES

Click here to see all my posts

The week leading up to Blenheim was great, it started with me up in Loughborough for the Monday and Tuesday to get some key training sessions done with Michelle and Stuart. One of the sessions was a track session on Tuesday which we had to do in the good old British weather, THE RAIN but it wasn’t too bad and we were joined on the track by some sprinters which was good and then back down in Birmingham on the Tuesday evening for the rest of the week.

I know I mentioned it in my last blog but I owe Michelle and Stuart a huge thank you for having me up at their place in the week, there aren’t many coaches and training partners out there that let you stop at their house all week, thank you guys.

On Tuesday it was my Mum’s birthday (Happy Birthday again Mum – love you) so we went to the pictures on the evening with my sister Carrie, Linda and Steph. We went to see Sex in the City 2, which was a fantastic film, I loved it. It was good to go out and chill in the evening as I was feeling really tired from training so was good to just go and have a mental break, switch off and watch a film.

Things were pretty boring for the rest of the week as training was coming down, this is the time that I struggle with, I feel like I should be doing more than I am but Michelle is always keeping a close eye on me to make sure I don’t do anything extra leading into races.

Okay so race day at Blenheim Palace – it was great to have so much support at the race as loads of people I know came down to watch me run, I had the family; my Mum, Dad, sister, Auntie, and cousin (plus her bloke), my best friend Clare and second family Linda and Martin, my friend Zoe, and an old work colleague and good friend Billy and his gorgeous family. I have totally fallen in love with Billy’s two little girls – they are absolutely gorgeous and I have also got to mention Sarah, the Team Dillon’s very own ‘Mary Poppins’.

It means so much to have such great support behind me! Thank you guys.

The swim started off as fast as what I thought it would with Abbie Thorrington taking it out hard and leading from the go, I found myself slightly back from the three leaders, so had to really work hard to get out the water near them, I managed to make up a bit of time in the long run up to T1, then out on the bike and was first out along with Abbie, Vicky Holland and Heather Jackson. I really wanted to push the pace and tried to get the group working which we did and managed to work well but on the second lap there was a crash with Heather and Vicky at the back of the pack so it just left me and Abbie, we pushed on and carried on working hard.

I feel totally for both Vicky and Heather, it’s not fun to come off your bike in the middle of the race, talking from experience!

Got into T2 and off I went, pushed out hard and ran hard throughout the whole run, pushing on, this was the way I wanted to race because next weekend is a massive race for me in Des Monies and today would be my last hard day.

I ended up winning by 2 minutes 45 seconds (ish) which I was chuffed with as I wasn’t totally fresh going into the race but felt great.

Looking forward, I am flying out on Tuesday to the USA with Stuart who had a fantastic second place as well today.

Now onto Des Moines… let the balls be slammed!

DAVID KING: TRAINING BEGINS NOW

Welcome to the very start of my 2010/11 season and after having such a blast last season I‘m really looking forward to it. The Olympics quite literally was a dream come true but now it is time to get on with next season!

It’s always an exciting year after Olympics to see who has used all their energy in the previous season or who has decided to retire? We are ready to work for the next games, which will take a lot of work to make that jump up to top five in four years but we are confident we can get there. It seems a long way off but you really do need that time to prepare and work towards being the best.

We touched down back in our training base in Poland just last Thursday and hit the ground running. Today our tame running coach arrives; some say his voice can only be heard by cats; and if you tune in to 88.4fm you can hear his thoughts; all we know for sure is that he’s called Jacek.

This guy is just a machine and gets me to do distances and times I would have laughed at when we were training in the UK. It’s great to have good voices around you that you can trust are truly pushing you for satisfaction instead of money. This week is all about fitness tests, so we can figure out boundaries and where we would like to be at the start of early season. Basically, reach your limit everyday… and that’s it. Sound like fun?

Anyway, all I’m saying is our holidays are over now which always seems a shame but it’s good to get back to the grind. This year we didn’t actually manage to get away for our holiday. Last year we had a fantastic week in a Villa in Spain with a load of friends but with Olympics this last season we are completely spent up.

Instead we visited family and friends, having BBQ’s and trips out to York, Blackpool and climbing stunning mountains in the Lake District. Not a complete failure then and we actually got some decent weather by British standards.

We have some Chiller shows in two weeks, 12th of June in Cardiff and 13th in Altringham so we’re looking forward to those and I will keep you posted on how they go. Shows are a little more on the glamorous side of skating but should raise some much needed funds for our training.

Have a great day and remember always believe!

Here I am in Ostrava, in the east of Czech Republic. There is a heavy contingency in the line up tonight including World Record Holder and Olympic Champion Dayron Robles. He ran the world record on this very track two years ago.

Andy Turner from GB, Petre Svoboda, Arthur Noga and a sprinkle of Americans. All of these guys have a few races under their belts and are in pretty decent shape. I will have to have my wits about me if I want to put the pressure on.

I think the temperature is below 13 degrees Celsius and cloudy but I’m feeling good. If fireworks don’t happen here, they will happen soon.

Stay tuned on Eurosport, I run at 18:30 GMT.

Race number one:
It has been a lovely day weather wise with perfect conditions for sprinting. I won my race comfortably with a time of 13.60 seconds. This is encouraging because it is my fastest season opener ever.

Last year I think I ran 13.74 at the same meet. Furthermore, Friday I was vomiting as a result of a 24 hour bug that I caught and this morning I woke up with a sore back. I think it was a combination of my squats session the previous day (still training hard) and sleeping awkwardly.

My coach had a target time of only 13.70 which I surpassed so I am pleased with the job I did today.

I am looking forward to the next race!

JODIE STIMPSON: RACE SEASON KNOCKING ON THE DOOR

I have been training really hard since I got back from St Anthony’s, not only concentrating on one discipline, but all three really. Triathlon is such a hard sport. You just can’t let one of them go, otherwise you will not get a look in, as the world class series races are jam-packed with the best in the world. Who would want it any other way?

I have been training a lot at Loughborough with Michelle and Stuart. It’s a lot easier to train up here, well when I say easier I mean you can get out on the bike, run on softer surfaces and swim in a 50m swimming pool (now and again) but it defiantly is a lot harder physically when you’re training with these guys.

Standards compliant sports website design by professionals for professionals

I have had loads of “balls in the wheelie bin” sessions recently and it’s all about putting the pennies in the bank and getting ready for the major race season which is knocking on the door and getting me very excited. I do love training but this is what I train for, putting myself on the start line and giving it all until I cross that finishing line. Exciting times ahead!

I cannot believe the wacky weather we have had over the last week but I have bloody loved it and I bet all you athletes out there have loved it too. It’s so much nicer and easier to get out and train in nice hot weather. I did my long run on Sunday in shorts and vest and caught the sun. Love it!

My next race coming up is the Blenheim Triathlon, obviously last year this was a great race for me, not only because I won, but it was my first proper race under Team Dillon. It was the start of my new journey in triathlon.

I am feeling really good in training and am excited to give it all on the 6th! Wish me luck, hope to see you there!

I will let you know how I get on.

SARAH SAUVEY: UPDATE FROM OFF SEASON

Click here to see all my posts

I thought it was about time to write and give an update of where I am and what I am up to.

As you will see I have spent some time giving my website a facelift! I had quite a lot of new photos and content after my Olympic debut. I returned to Melbourne end of March, straight back into week four of university.

I played catch up at university and had a few, much needed, weeks break from training and tried to let my injuries heal up. I tried to get some wakeboarding in, but sadly that injury to my shin when I hit the fence persisted in giving me grief. I had a great time away at Bonnie Doon nonetheless.

I managed to pick up a job as a mascot. I work usually three or four times a week as Gilbert the Gecko which has proved to be really good fun. I am also assisting to run the snow sports dry-land programme at a local school.

I am still working as a personal assistant as well when needed. I have started back physical training and I’m coming into my last week for this semester at University. I will be completing my last subject next semester and should have my degree in Multimedia (Business Marketing) come November.

My three jobs are flexible and with just one subject at University next semester it should allow me quite a lot of time for training leading up to the next northern season. I am unsure of my plans this southern season, but I will try to get on snow if I can. I have been asked to do a photo shoot in New Zealand early September which is awesome.

My injuries are getting better and physical gains are coming back slowly. I also got my Olympic bib and all the 17 nation pins that I spent so much time collecting, framed and it looks great!

I will be in touch soon!

JODIE STIMPSON: UP & DOWNS OF TRIATHLON

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

Click here to see all my posts

It’s been a while since I have written a blog – sorry about that. I will fill you in on what’s been going on.

After I got back from St Anthonys I got ill ☹ which for all you athletes out there you know how frustrating that is. When you can’t train, it’s such a pain in the arse – but it didn’t last too long. Thankfully I was back into training within a week.

I have been living up at Michelle and Stuart’s house this week doing some real hard core balls in the wheelie bin sessions. I love holding onto Stuart and Michelle’s wheels on the bike sessions and then trying to stop Stuart from getting too far in front of me on the run. This week Mick McWilliams, an Irish Elite Triathlete, joined us so it was great to have someone else pushing me on the bike. He is a ex-Olympic swimmer so it is also great company in the pool. I know Stuart loved having someone to push him in the hard swim sets.

I finished off my hard training week doing by doing a bike race at Hillingdon. It was a 50km bike race. Michelle has been pushing the pace as usual on the bike and I knew she was getting stronger and stronger. When she was going through and off with Stuart – I was holding on for dear life!!! Of course I love it and I know I have got the best job in the world and I am so lucky to be able to do it.

So the bike race . . .

Lucky me had Dad and Carrie come down with me today and when I got there It wasn’t long before I saw Michelle and Sarah Murphy. It had been a while since I had seen Sarah and it was great to see her. She is a true legend and I have got to mention her bag!

You can tell she has been going to triathlon event for a while with Michelle. Stuart asked for a Tool -out one popped from her band. Michelle asked for safety pins – out popped some from her bag. A TRUE LEGEND!!

So myself and Michelle warmed up on the turbos and then got on with the 50k race. It was about a mile loop which meant there were about 31 laps.

Off we went – the pace was up and down and was very interesting to say the least. It defintely tested my bike handling skills. I was using this as a good burn up so I tried going off the front a few times and was having fun but also trying to stay out of trouble.

There were a few crashing during the race and the race had to get put on hold and started again. As we were getting to the end of the race with 8 laps to go the pace moved up. To be honest I wish it had happened earlier. With 2 laps to go Stuart told me to just have a go and hopefully Michelle wouldn’t be too far away from me. As I went Michelle was blocked in, I had a bash and got caught coming in with 1 lap to go. It ended with near enough 30 odd women having a bash for the sprint – I was staying well out of that!!

So I had fun at my first crit race today.

JODIE STIMPSON: ST ANTHONYS TRIATHLON – RACING IN THE USA

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Click here to see all my posts

Firstly I have got to say a massive “thank you” – to all the guys at St Anthonys Triathlon, for putting on a great event at the weekend.

Race morning was very different to the one at the World Championship race as we started at 6.55am. The men were off at 6.52am. It was fun waiting for it to get light before we could start – so we could see where we were going!!

The water temp was lovely and warm which made it a non wetsuit swim. The swim was going to be fast one with Laura Bennett and Jodie Swallow on the start line. I was looking forward to this swim to see how I would get on, as I have been pleased with how my swimming has come on over the winter training with Michelle.

So the race started from a short beach run and then was a U shaped 1 lap 1500m swim. Laura and Sarah went off as I thought they would and because of how choppy the swim was, they disappeared in the waves and I didn’t see either of them again. I found myself on my own for half of the swim and then Jodie swallow came up beside me and swam the second half of the swim side by side.

Standards compliant sports website design by professionals for professionals

A good T2 and I was out onto the bike. I had a good bike, feeling the strongest I have ever felt on the bike. So chasing Michelle and Stuart’s skinny asses all winter is paying off!!!!

I came in T2 with Jodie and a few others around and about in 9th and went out onto the run.

By the time I had reached Michelle on side of the course I had moved into 8th and could see two other girls up the road. I found myself running through, feeling stonger and stonger as the race went on.

I then saw Laura Bennett who was in 4th and passed her just before the 5k turn around point.

I then had in my head – next one, not knowing who I was chasing but just kept pushing and pushing. Michelle was on the side line shouting push all the way which I did.

I couldn’t catch the first three which were Sarah Haskins, Jill Peterson and Mirinder Carfrae.

I was chuffed with how I raced today and have just got another 5 days of training out here – before I return home to continue my next block of training.

I am really looking forward to seeing my family and friends after the winter training block I’ve missed them loads and can’t wait to catch up.
