MAREK BEHNKE: FROM THE SWISS SNOW TO THE EXAM HALLS

It’s been another busy few days for me but I’ve rounded-up an eventful long weekend below:

Saturday 23rd – Terminal 5 again – third time lucky! Having had to cancel my flight for earlier in the week as I wasn’t going to Zweisimmen, I had booked a flight from London City which tied in nicely with the rest of the team from school arriving from Luton. BA decided to cancel it. So I had to try again with a flight from Heathrow which gave me 45 minutes from when my flight landed to get on the train to Meiringen. This being Zurich, I knew that things would run like clockwork, so I just trusted that BA would do their bit. Luckily everything worked out fine, and I made my train.

Sunday 24th – Had a morning of free skiing before the International Schoolboys Parallel Slalom. This is always a really fun race with each school putting in teams of four. We had a really strong team and cruised through the first few rounds and found ourselves in the quarter-finals and had high hopes of making though further. Sadly a crash from our first skier put paid to that so we were out which was a real shame.

Monday 25th – GS day, one that I was really looking forward to given the training that I was doing just before Christmas. The weather wasn’t too bad either. I can’t believe what a mess I made of my first run, I came to a complete stop at one point and had to pole like mad to get going again. Somehow I was lying in seventh place overall and second in my age group. I had a fantastic second run down a lovely open course. I put in the second fastest run and pulled up to fourth overall, only missing out on third place by 0.15sec. More importantly I was awarded the Viceroy Cup as the winner of my age group – a good day!

Tuesday 26th – What horrible weather, it was a complete white out, I am glad that it was slalom rather than GS, otherwise it would have been cancelled. First run was going really well until four gates from the end when I straddled a gate, I hiked back up and got back in the course, but lost a lot of valuable time. What was worse was that I climbed up one gate too far, so wasted even more time than ever. My second run was equally fast and I made no major mistakes, and posted the third fastest time, but that wasn’t enough to put me on the podium, sadly I finished fourth in my age group and eleventh overall which wasn’t great.

So now back to school for another exam on Thursday, now what can I remember about ideal gases……?!

I am now really looking forward to going back out to Bormio in February and racing in the English Championships which will mean five races in five days, that is going to be hard work!

MAREK BEHNKE: NOT A GOOD DAY!

It isn’t Friday 13th, but it is Wednesday 13th. I have just had a phone call from the GB Ski Cross coach, it turns out that none of the GB guys are going to Zweisimmen for the Swiss Cup and Europa Cup races which means that I am the only one. My Mum spent all afternoon trying to sort out accommodation and transport for both of us to go which isn’t ideal as I would still be the only one racing. In the end given that it would cost about £450 before any flights and that she would have to turn down two days of work I have decided that I won’t be able to go either. Now I have to rebook my flights so that instead of flying to Switzerland on Thursday I won’t go until the weekend, when I will join the rest of my team mates from school for the International Schoolboys races in Meiringen. Such a lot of hassle and so frustrating as this was the only Europa Cup I could race this year.

I have also heard today that the Ski Cross Races at the English Champs in Bormio have been cancelled as only five people had entered. Not really surprising as they were expecting us to race GS in the morning and then Skier cross at night!

All in all not a good day.

MAREK BEHNKE: HAPPY NEW YEAR

Well the best laid plans for the New Year didn’t quite work out. We hadn’t realised that the ice rink was going to be closed, and we decided that going to the hot springs was perhaps not the best idea as the access route is very narrow and in the dark going over the river would be rather dangerous, so we all stayed in and played twister and on the Wii. It was amazing going outside at midnight as there were fireworks going off everywhere. The noise was incredible as it bounced off the mountains and echoed around us. The Italians are mental with fireworks!

Even though it was New Years Day we were still training bright and early. We were back on the Stelvio doing training. Everything was going so well and I am really happy with my progress. I just wish that this wasn’t my last day of training. Most of the others are staying out, or coming back in a week for the speed week, sadly my funds don’t stretch to that and I have to go home tomorrow.

So back home, I am having to revert back to school and exams, and also I am starting to coach for my club – Ski MK Race team which will be fun, I can also earn some money to go towards the 2nd pair of GS skis that I really need.
I am also planning my next trip which will be towards the end of January. I will be going to Zweisimmen in Switzerland for a Ski Cross Race. This will be for the Swiss Cup and also, if I can get a licence, the Europa Cup. The GB Ski Cross Coach is supporting me for this, but it is up to the powers that be.

As soon as those races are over I will head off to Meiringen for my last ever International Schoolboys Races, where I will link up with some of the guys from school. It is always a really good few days.

MAREK BEHNKE: BACK IN ACTION

Boxing Day – 7.15am, I am on the road again. Yes I am heading back out to Bormio so it is the long drive south back to Terminal 5 at Heathrow again. I am hoping that we will be racing again this week in Chamonix where there are 2 night slalom races. Arrived in Bormio and found that we are not racing after all. FIS races only allow 6 racers from each nation, unless they are undersubscribed, we were beaten to it by some others, so we will have a week of training, and can watch the World Cup Downhill instead!

27th Dec – The blister on my toe has popped, I am going to have to be really careful. Blister plasters will need to be used to make sure I don’t do any more damage. It has been a great day as all the top racers in the world are training for the downhill. I went up the list with Axel Lund Svindal and David Poisson who are top 15 racers, it was great chatting to them. They are such big guys, especially Svindal, he is massive. Also we were free skiing today and did lots of bumps and powder – fantastic!

28th Dec – Went over to Oga today which is on the other side of the valley to our normal training area on Stelvio, too many people there because of the World Cup races. Had a really good day of GS training. Managed to get speared by a gate just below my ribs, I was in a tuck and just didn’t see it. That will be a massive bruise later!

29th Dec – WORLD CUP DAY, and we are training at Oga again, that is so unfair! Last year we got to see the whole race and got to chat with the racers in the finish. We did get to see a bit of the race after training it was a really good race. Svindal didn’t do that well, apparently he has been ill! It was won by Andrej Jerman from Slovenia, I didn’t see that result coming, they disqualified Mario Schreiber who came in second due to a boot infringement, I can’t believe that can happen with these guys.

30th December – Snowing today, so the light wasn’t that good, had another solid day of GS training, we will be training on the World Cup piste tomorrow so that should be fun but it will be really hard snow after the race.

31st December – Had a fantastic days training. It all sort of clicked into place. My coach shook my hand at the end and said really good skiing. My GS technique has really changed. Just a shame I don’t have any more races for a while. Really looking forward to this evening. Unlike last year we are being allowed to stay up to see the New Year in, we are going skating and then up to the hot springs. That will be a different way to celebrate!

MAREK BEHNKE: XMAS BREAK

My week off skiing for Christmas was a bit of a rattle! Got home really late on Saturday and it was nice to see snow here. I had to be up early on the Sunday and Monday for a first aid course, for my ski instructors qualification. I am now trained to use a defibrillator! It was really interesting, I learnt all about CPR, hypothermia and frostbite – all useful stuff. My mum made me go to the doctors about the frostbite on my toe as the blister was massive – about 2.5 cm long. The doctor was useless, she had never seen frostbite before and hadn’t got a clue what to do, just gave me print off and told me I should take a month off skiing to let it heal. Not a chance!

December 23rd – We went down to London for our annual family skating get together at Tower of London – can you believe it, it was chucking it down with rain! It would have been so nice in the snow. We only just made it in time because I realised that I had lost my wallet, I must have had it nicked in Milan on my way home and I never noticed. I spent ages ringing round the banks, to get my cards replaced.

Christmas Eve – Now for serious Christmas celebrations. First up was Wigilia in London with the Polish half of the family and then a long boring drive up to Staffordshire to join the other half of the family for Christmas Day. Christmas lunch has to be my favourite meal of the year; my Grandmother does the best turkey.

Klausberg is really cold minus 20 but lovely and clear. There is a really big field here with 117 male racers from 39 countries. I managed to finish both runs in the Giant Slalom on Wednesday 16th, but my first run was way too slow, and very cautious. The second run was better but I know that there is way more to come. Anyway it was my first race in a year, so I put it down to being race rusty. Looking forward to tomorrow though.

Thursday was another very cold day, if anything it was even colder than the day before. I have a very sore big toe, I think that I have frost bite. Anyway – I had a very similar start list to Wednesday but managed to complete the GS again, and reduced my points again. Still not racing as I know I can though I need to do a lot more races to be able to do this.

I am really happy to hear that the BA strike has been called off, that means that my flight on Boxing Day is still on so I will be able to get back to Bormio for more training after Christmas.

My toe was OK to race on Friday, it hasn’t gone black! It’s still really cold here and there is another big field for the slalom race and I am starting near the back, which isn’t good as I get the ruts! I got my pole stuck in the start gate and it took me about 20 gates to get it back under control, still not too bad. My second run was dreadful as I missed a gate and had to hike back up, but I finished and didn’t finish last! At last I have FIS points in slalom which is the first time in two years.

I am now back in Bormio as there is another slalom race here tomorrow, but I will be travelling home tomorrow. So a week of rest and turkey and hopefully time to get my toe sorted out. I wonder if they will use it as an example on the first aid course that I am on on Sunday and Monday?

MAREK BEHNKE: WELCOME TO MY NEW BLOG

Click here to see all my posts

Hi My name is Marek Behnke, and I am a ski racer! This winter I would like to keep you up to date with what is happening as I travel across Europe for all my races.

This winter I have a busy programme of training and racing as well as being in Year 13 at school where I am studying for my A levels in Physics, Design Technology and RS.

I am really looking forward to this winter as I hope that I will be as successful as I was this summer when I finished 2nd overall in the All England Championships as well as winning the British Indoor Grand Prix Series in my age group – Junior 2 (Under 19). I will be racing in all four alpine disciplines – Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super G and downhill as well as a new freestyle discipline of Skiercross.

I will be based in Bormio (Italy) for some of the winter with my alpine race team – Ambition. When I am back at home I will be training with Ski MK Race Team who train in Milton Keynes. I am able to do this with the support of Sno!Zone who allow me to use their slopes free of charge.

Friday 11th December was the end of term and my time to pack! I needed to check that all my school work is on my laptop. It won’t stay switched on long enough to boot up, why do these things always happen the night before I go away?

on Saturday 12th December it was a case of being back at Heathrow Terminal 5 again – and that means the start of the winter for me! I am heading off to Bormio for a week of training and racing. It will be so good to be back on the snow again! I have had to leave my laptop behind and borrow my Dad’s which means no music or films to fill the journey. Oh well, I will just have to do some of my physics as I have mocks when I get back after Christmas, and a retake of one of my A level papers

On Sunday I was up at 6am, what a time to be getting up in the morning. Free skiing day, no gates, but lots of giant slalom work to brush up on core technique again. Only problem is that we were on the hill for 8 hours, that blew the flight out of my system! It’s amazing how quickly you get back into training routine, ski in the morning, lunch, more skiing, back to the flat, service skis, schoolwork, supper, and fall into bed. If only I could log into Dad’s computer!

There were flat light conditions all day on Monday, not great for training and the coaches had set a 60 gate slalom course which was really tough in the conditions. We had a new rule in training today, if you come out of the course, you have to walk back up. I came out on the second to last gate so it was a very long walk back up while the other guys got to take the lift up! I don’t want to do that too often!

I also discovered that the problem with my laptop is terminal. My Mum text me to say that the motherboard has failed, and Dell won’t help as it is two weeks out of warranty despite the fact I only had it for Christmas last year.

Things got worse when I heard that the BA cabin staff have voted to strike which means that I may not be able to get back out to Italy for my next training week starting on Boxing Day. The whole of the team are going to be affected as we all travel together.

The sun was back out again on Tuesday, but it was very cold -10C. Giant Slalom training today which went pretty well and I managed to stay in the course on each run, so that saved me the walk! We were training under full race conditions so that meant stripping down to catsuits which was really cold in the conditions. Then it was back to the flat to get packed. Five of us are heading off to Klausberg for the FIS races which will give me four races in four days – two Giant slalom and two slalom. I am really not looking forward to the 6 ½ hour journey through Italy, Livigno and Switzerland in the Ambitions minibus. It is going to be a very long day, but I am looking forward to racing tomorrow. It is my first outdoor race since last January and my first chance for FIS points since the same races last year, so fingers crossed!
