ANNA TURNEY: ASPIRING MINDS – DAME KELLY HOLMES LEGACY TRUST

As an athlete mentor on the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust, I had a fun day on Wednesday in Big Wood School, Nottingham on the ‘Aspiring Minds’ project.

Skills and positive attitude are taught via interactive activities delivered by a team of trained communicators and athletes.

Big Wood School’s Year 9 pupils certainly grasped the opportunity to learn. The Aspiring Minds day is made up of various workshops involving equipment such as batak boards, rowing machines and even equipment that measures how fast you can kick a ball.

We ended the sports psychology lesson learning to juggle – in less than four minutes for the 13 year old volunteer in my group, very impressive!

As an athlete, I am well aware that attitude is central to success. Even though some pupils were shy at first, everyone finished the day with a positive ‘have a go’ attitude and a big smile. I set out to inspire and came away feeling motivated myself – it is amazing how inspirational young people can be.

ANNA TURNEY: TWO BRONZE MEDALS AT EUROPA CUP FINALS

Click here to see all my posts

I’m pleased to have finished the season with two Europa Cup Final bronze medals in GS and Slalom, followed by another bronze in Super G. May I continue to improve and have a successful season next year.

I am now training in Serre Chevalier, sponsored by Hotel Plein Sud. It is great to be back in my favourite resort in the French Alps, where I used to snowboard. Snow conditions are good and the weather has been beautiful, ideal for working on technical aspects of my skiing.

Next week I shall return home, continue my motivational speaking and work with the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust. With government cuts, Winter Sports funding looks likely to be pushed aside.

In order to continue with this sport and pursue my quest to win medals in the 2014 Sochi Paralympic Games I will be working hard to develop relationships and secure sponsorship. Only two full seasons until the 2014 Paralympics and my skiing continues to improve!

ANNA TURNEY: EUROPA CUP FINALS IN LA MOLINA

Click here to see all my posts

As a result of torrential rain and heavy snow in La Molina, Spain, the Europa Cup Final Super Combined and Super G were both cancelled. However the organisers managed to run a successful Slalom today.

Slushy and wet snow conditions meant a soft, rutted course, and my first run was frustrating but I managed to bring it back in the second run to finish with a Bronze medal behind World Champion, Schaffelhuber.

Congratulations to the other athletes representing GB; Kelly Gallagher and her guide Charlotte Evans, who won the Visually Impaired category.

Giant Slalom tomorrow…

ANNA TURNEY: SILVER IN CANADA

Click here to see all my posts

46 competitors from 13 different nations, including France, Switzerland, Holland and the USA, had gathered to compete in the 2011 Kimberley NorAm speed races in Canada.

Training has been going really well, I’m skiing faster than ever and having won two of the downhill training runs, I was hoping for gold. I went all out in the races but unfortunately crashed in the downhill. As my coach helped me get my ski back on, he said: “If it’s any consolation, you were going faster than the most of the boys!”

In the first Super G, I was clocked at 97kmph (over 60mph), the fastest time for sitting women. I was flying along but with the finish in sight, was launched forward over the last jump resulting in a monumental crash. Shaken, I attempted the second race, managing to pull it back and win a silver medal for GB, but I still had my eye on gold.

The results were disappointing, but on reflection, there are positives to be taken from it. I am skiing fast, I just need to work on skiing over rollers and compressions at high speed. I have no idea how I managed to avoid injury but somehow I came out with only a few bruises and sore muscles and am now even more determined to return to Kimberley next year and conquer it.

Next step is training with Team GB in Austria followed by Slalom, GS and Super G races in St Lambrecht, after which we will travel to Spain for the Europa Cup Finals in La Molina in March.

I was disappointed to have crashed out in the slalom, and to be out of the medals in the Giant Slalom but look forward to racing in Canada in February before the Europa Cup finals in March.

Many thanks to TASS and Get Kids Going for their support, and to Meteor for their wonderful airport parking services.

Serre Chevalier resort in France gave a warm welcome to the GB team for an excellent Pre-Worlds Training camp.

ANNA TURNEY: 2011 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS COMMENCES

Click here to see all my posts

The first IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships in Sestriere, where the 2006 Torino Games were held, opened yesterday with the downhill where Sean Rose finished 6th for GB. Cheering crowds in the sun, TV cameras and DJ created a great atmosphere. The Italians certainly know how to have a party.

The team is staying at the Villagio Olympico, which hosted the athletes for the Games, and we enjoyed the Opening Ceremony parade through the streets into the stadium, supported by volunteers.

Talan Skeels Piggins and Sean Rose compete in the Super G tomorrow whilst the rest of the eight strong GB team prepare for the Slalom on Thursday and Giant Slalom on Saturday, with a great support team.

As a team, we’re well prepared with excellent Pre-Worlds training, many thanks to Serre Chevalier resort for their support and also to sponsors; TASS and Get Kids Going for their support of this event.

The downhill was shown on Italian TV but unfortunately I don’t think it will be live in the UK, however you can watch the races on www.paralympicsport.tv click on the title for the link.

ANNA TURNEY: EUROPA CUP MEDAL

Click here to see all my posts

I was thrilled to come home with the top result for GB in women’s sitting: a bronze medal and fourth in Giant Slalom.

Anna Turney wins Bronze in the Europa Cup

Kelly Gallagher got a bronze and two silvers in the Visually Impaired class and Talan Skeels-Piggins won gold in the Pitztal Super G. A great start to the season for Team GB.

Unfortunately the races in Pitztal and La Molina were cancelled due to bad weather, scuppering our chances of qualifying for speed in the World Championships, I shall be focusing on the technical events; slalom and GS.

Thank you very much to the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme, Get Kids Going, Salomon, Two Seasons and Oakley for their support! Training recommences early January for the World Championships.

ANNA TURNEY: PITZTAL EUROPA CUP

Click here to see all my posts

Team GB arrived in Pitztal, Austria for the first Europa Cup. As we unloaded the van we heard shrill screams and jangling cowbells… and discovered the delights of Krampus festival.

Out of the darkness, horned figures appeared making a lot of noise – and a herd of locals dressed in ancient costumes were busy chasing away bad winter spirits. Perhaps it’ll bring us some luck in the races!

We loaded all monoskis up the mountain and have enjoyed morning training sessions in the sun but winter has returned with a vengeance just in time for the races at the weekend, it’s going to be a cold one!

Thanks so much to Two Seasons who have stuck by me for the last three years. You are wonderful!
