CRAIG BROWN: I THINK HARRY REDKNAPP WOULD HAVE MADE A GOOD ENGLAND BOSS

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

There have been a lot of changes in the Scottish management since I was there 6 years ago, George Burley is the 4th manager. We had Bertie Vogts for a while and then in a short space of time we had Walter Smith and Alex McLeish. Neither Walter nor Alex really had a long sustained spell but were both doing exceptionally well so we hope that George Burley will do equally well and stay in charge for a good bit longer.

Everyone in Scotland is pleased to have a Scottish manager again. We have had three in a row now but Alex McLeish was the only one with a really outstanding international playing pedigree, he played 77 games for Scotland. I think George played a dozen or so but Walter didn’t play for his country at all but they are all good and very highly rated managers. It is good to have the feel good factor back in Scotland with a Scottish manager. Even though our Assistant Manager is English, a former England captain in Terry Butcher he is a very popular person in Scotland so everyone is happy now with the set up.

I was surprised and disappointed that England went for a foreign manager again with the number of excellent managers they have in England. I think they have got a good manager in Fabio Capello, with regards to his CV and his pedigree at the highest level but I am quite sure there are a number of English managers who could also do that job very well.

They had an unfortunate experience with Steve McLaren and maybe that put them off appointing another English manager but someone with a long spell in management and with the nous that someone like Harry Redknapp has would be very hard to beat as the Manager of the English national team.
